Biography

Clifford was a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. He had romantic feelings for Eden Pond, though she did not reciprocate.

After the outbreak of World War II, he hoped for his release from the Sheriff's Office so he could join the U.S. Navy. His desire for the Navy was driven by his father’s service in the Merchant Marines during World War I. Clifford Stern Sr. was one of 24 killed when the tanker SS Vacuum was sunk by a German u-boat in the Hebrides Islands[1].
