His desire for the Navy was driven by his father’s service in the Merchant Marines during World War I. Clifford Stern Sr. was one of 24 killed when the tanker SS ''Vacuum'' was sunk by a German u-boat in the Hebrides Islands<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.usmm.org/ww1merchant.html| title=List of U.S. Merchant Marine vessels sunk in World War I}}</ref>.

Biography

Clifford was a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. In high school, he expressed romantic feelings for Eden Pond that she did not reciprocate.

Though something of a troublemaker as a boy, as an adult went to work as a deputy sheriff in Tillamook County. Still, he had an unpleasant demeanor and continued to treat Eden with a degree of disdain even years after his advances were rebuffed in high school
