Allen Birch is a character in the Eden Pond Series.

Biography

Allen is the Tillamook County Sheriff. He has a stoic manner, avoiding expressions of emotion of any kind while on the job. He also doesn't socialize, except as required by the protocols of the office he holds. He's a member of Rotary, Lions, and the Elks in Tillamook—also less out of personal desire than political expedience. In Tillamook County, those who like him appreciate this aspect of his character; he's dedicated to the job, not devoted to the trappings of his position. But he does have opposition from more politically active members of the community, people who do see public office as a prize to be won and exploited rather than a service to perform. Eden Pond works as his secretary.

He is a widower, his wife having died in 1933. He is a church-goer who serves on the Alter Guild at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Tillamook. During the World War I, he was a member of the merchant marine, and was onboard the SS Vacuum, a tanker sunk by a German u-boat in the Hebrides Islands.[1]
